Free Swimming for Independence Day at the Marinette Civic Center!

The City of Marinette Recreation Department is celebrating Independence Day in a special way again this year. Recreation Department Program Assistant Terri Florek says its super exciting!

Free swimming is open to everyone from one p.m. until four p.m. tomorrow July Fourth!

The latest Littoral Combat Ship to be manufactured at Marinette Marine is launched Saturday.

The future USS Billings made its way into the Menominee River Saturday and is one step closer to joining the U.S. Navy’s fleet. Michigan Congressman Jack Bergman says this is a war fighting product that we need as a country to keep America safe and it’s built right here in Michigan and Wisconsin.




Wisconsin Congressman Mike Gallagher a strong advocate for the LCS program says it’s time to start investing in our workforce.

According to Lockheed Martin the LCS 15 will be focused on mine-clearing, anti-submarine & anti-surface warfare missions. The future USS Billings is part of the 355 ships the U-S Navy is working to get.

A Crivitz Man who was sent to Prison for a Murder-For-Hire Plot Dies in Prison.

dettmering courtRobert Dettmering, 76, pleaded no contest on January 20 and was convicted of conspiracy to commit first-degree intentional homicide.

The Department of Corrections confirmed the death, saying Dettmering died Thursday evening and they have started an internal investigation. 

Prosecutors say Dettmering offered a man $10,000 to kill his son and his son's wife in July of last year.  

The man instead called the Marinette County Sheriff's Office and the Wisconsin Department of Justice sent an agent posing as a hit man to meet at Dettmering's bar, Kranky Bob's. Dettmering was arrested when he offered the agent $1,000 as a down payment on the murders.

Dettmering said he was upset his son was selling property he had given him.

It’s History in the making this week, as the first female appointed District Attorney will be sworn in.

It’s been a little over a week since newly appointed District Attorney DeShea Morrow stepped into her new role as Marinette County’s District Attorney and I was fortunate enough to catch up with D.A. DeShay in between court cases Tuesday morning. 

Morrow says she is very honored to have the title as District Attorney and it’s a great responsibility.

Morrow says once she gets the lawyers on board she will proceed forward and execute a plan that she has in mind.

District Attorney DeShay Morrow is officially being sworn in as Marinette County District Attorney this Thursday at 3:45 p.m. by Judge Miron in Court Branch 1.

One Marinette County Supervisor speaks out about other Wisconsin Counties passing resolutions opposing the Back Forty Mine.

At Tuesday’s Marinette County Board of Supervisors Meeting I had the opportunity to speak with Chairperson Mark Anderson about Brown and Door County’s decisions regarding the Back Forty Mine. Anderson says the board should be pleased with Brown County’s decision to support the opposition of the mine.



Anderson says he is glad other boards across the State are starting to take notice.


Door County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday morning for their monthly meeting. There isn’t word yet what, if any, action is being taken against the Back Forty Mine.

The debate over whether or not to advance Menominee County's Administrative Assistant to Interim Administrator is decided.

At last night’s Menominee County Board meeting the board agreed to appoint Sherry DuPont as Menominee County’s Interim County Administrator but not after a lengthy discussion about DuPont’s proposal. Commissioner Bernie Lang says this is a package deal.


Board Chairperson Charlie Meintz says he thought the proposal went a little too far.


Ultimately, the board voted six to three in favor of DuPont serving as Interim County Administrator effective immediately.

Marinette County adopts the Carlson - Dettman pay plan.

Beginning next month, Marinette County will be utilizing a new pay plan.  At yesterday’s Marinette County Board of Supervisors meeting the board went through a variety of amendments to the policies and procedures to be able to implement the Carlson and Dettman pay plan.

 

Marinette County Administrator John LaFabvre  says this pay plan has been a discussion item for the last six to eight months.


LeFabvre says for the most part, Carlson Dettman pay plan is complete.



The new pay plan goes into effect for Marinette County on July 16th.

The Historic Waterfront District in Downtown Menominee will be bursting with color this Sunday!

AFA LOGOThe 22nd Annual Art-for-All is being held at the Great Lakes Memorial Marina Park in Menominee on Sunday, June 25th. This event attracts artists from all over the United States to the historic downtown. Art-for-All Co-Chair Missy Peterson says the Marina will have every type of art that you can think of.


Peterson says the event truly is for everyone.


The Annual Art-for-All event begins at ten a.m. on Sunday, June 25th at the Marina Park in Menominee and goes until four p.m.

It's the 36th Annual Menominee River Century Bike Ride this Sunday, June 25th.

MCRIDEPhoto Courtesy of MCRIDE.COMIt’s the last Sunday of June which means it’s time for the BAMC Menominee River Century Bike Ride. The 36th annual Century Bike Ride is being held this Sunday, June 25th and is hosted by Bay Area Medical Center. BAMC Marketing Director John Hofer says the ride covers over 200 miles of road.



Helmets are required to participate in the ride and you’re advised to arrive early due to the number of cyclists in attendance.

One of Wisconsin’s 72 Counties joins Marinette County in opposing the Back Forty Mine.

The Brown County Board voted against the proposed sulfide mine with a vote of 21 to zero with two abstentions and three absences. Next week Tuesday, June 27th at nine a.m. the Door County Board of Supervisors will be addressing the Back Forty Mine.

It looks as though now is a great time to be in the market as Marinette School District receives an A + rating.

At this week’s Marinette School District School Board meeting the board approved the resolution awarding the sale of over 8.4 million-dollars in general obligation promissory notes. Marinette School District Finance Director Brian Walters says the school’s financial advisors went out to the bond market for potential investors to bid.



Walters says this is phase two of Act 32.

The School District was hoping for a rate of 2.75%. However, due to the amount of interest they were able to secure a lower rate of two-point-one-seven-percent 2.17%.

Marinette School District Employees could be seeing an increase in wages.

The staff at the Marinette School District will be receiving getting a bump in their wages. At this week’s Marinette School Board meeting the board approved the 20-17 – 18 Support Staff Compensation and Adjustments. Finance Director Brian Walters says there is two pieces to this.


Walters says the adjustments are for the re-categorized positions.”

The two-percent raises for the staff at the Marinette School District will be in effect beginning July 1st.

Beginning this fall Marinette students and staff will see a change to the code of conduct that will be enforced district-wide.

At Tuesday night’s Marinette School Board meeting, Athletic Director Dean Furton furnished the amended code of conduct to the board. Furton says the code hasn’t been updated since 2012.



Furton says this past year the district followed their code in different situations and during that time they noticed that the consequences were varied; It was at that time they realized it needed to be rectified.



The Marinette School District followed their usual review process which included an extensive review of what is occurring in competing districts, what WIAA expects, and ultimately making sure it aligns with the Marine Way. Which the Board unanimously agreed and approved to begin in the 2017 – 18 School year.

The female collaborator who helped lead authorities on a two-day man hunt appears in court.

27-year-old, Ashley Niewierowoski (NER-OW-SKI) of Marinette appeared in Marinette County Court Tuesday with her attorney Dan Firkus for a status conference. Assistant District Attorney DeShea  Morrow and Attorney Firkus say they’ve come to a resolution.


Niewierowoski is being charged for her alleged involvement of the Corner Convenience Store,along with her boyfriend Chad Setunsky, in Stephenson, Wisconsin which led authorities on a two-day manhunt. She is currently facing charges of Burglary of a Building or Dwelling and first degree recklessly endangering safety both Class F Felonies which hold a maximum of 12 and-a-half-years in prison each.

As-well-as fleeing and eluding an officer – a Class I Felony which is a maximum of three-and-a-half-years in prison.

Niewierowoski’s is scheduled to appear in Marinette County Court on Tuesday, July 11th at 9:30 a.m. BCR Burglary Suspects
