Fatal Officer Involved Shooting Shuts Down Hwy 64

Update

Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve says an investigation in underway into a fatal officer-involved shooting early this morning.

The incident began at 12:10am with an incident involving a male suspect and a handgun at a motel in Marinette.  Sauve says at this point in the investigation, it is unclear whether this was some type of robbery attempt or a domestic incident.  

Sauve says using cell phone tracking Investigators determined the suspect was at or near a residence on Highway 64 in the Town of Peshtigo, and upon arrival at that location, officers saw a male suspect come from the residence, enter a vehicle and leave westbound on Highway 64.  Officers attempted to stop the vehicle at Schact road where it went partially into the ditch. The male suspect then exited the vehicle armed with a handgun, placing the officers in danger.  The suspect was shot and killed by the officers.  None of the two city police officers or two sheriff’s deputies at the scene were injured.)

Sauve says at this point they are not sure of the dead man’s identity. He says the individual was not familiar to them. Sauve says he’s a white male in his 30’s.

The Wisconsin State Department of Justice is investigating the officer involved shooting.  He says it’s yet to be determined which officers fire their weapons.  He says both long guns and handguns were used.

The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.

Sauve says Highway 64 is expected to remain closed from County T to County RW well into the afternoon as the investigation of the scene continues.

Highway 64 will remain closed from County T to County RW for several hours while the Wisconsin Department of Justice conducts their investigation.  No names have been released so far.

The School District of Marinette also has released a notice that any students that were impacted by the interruption to busing or unable to get to school due to the closure the students will  be excused.
