The public consumption, sale, or manufacturing of marijuana won’t be allowed in Marinette, even if Wisconsin joins the dozens of other states easing restrictions against the drug. Tuesday, Marinette’s common council approved an ordinance recommended by the city’s Public Safety and Code Enforcement committee that bans both using and selling pot within city limits. Although marijuana remains illegal under the federal Controlled Substance Act, several states, including neighboring Michigan have rolled out regulations allowing for the legal use of the drug, be it for medicinal or recreational purposes. Marinette City Attorney Jon Sbar does note that the new ordinance could be challenged in a higher court if pot is legalized in Wisconsin, as it is not always clear when local law or state law take precedence.
