The Menominee River is ranked as one of the most endangered rivers in the United States!

MenomineeRiver TomYoung header 1600x629The environmental group American Rivers released its annual list Tuesday and coming in at number ten is the Menominee River. The group showcases what threats the open-pit sulfide mine might pose by having it located on the bank of the river.

The acid drainage from the mine could potentially cause irreversible harm to the Menominee Rivers clean water, fish, and wildlife. American Rivers Representative, Kathy Rousseau says they were contacted by the Superior Watershed Partnership to take a look at the Menominee River.

Currently, Aquila Resources is seeking permits for the open pit sulfide mine that would use cyanide to extract and process ore on site.

They’ve already secured three of the four permits needed for the mine with the Wetlands being the last one needed.
