The Menominee River is ranked as one of the most endangered rivers in the United States!

MenomineeRiver TomYoung header 1600x629The environmental group American Rivers released its annual list Tuesday and coming in at number ten is the Menominee River. The group showcases what threats the open-pit sulfide mine might pose by having it located on the bank of the river.

The acid drainage from the mine could potentially cause irreversible harm to the Menominee Rivers clean water, fish, and wildlife. American Rivers Representative, Kathy Rousseau says they were contacted by the Superior Watershed Partnership to take a look at the Menominee River.

Currently, Aquila Resources is seeking permits for the open pit sulfide mine that would use cyanide to extract and process ore on site.

They’ve already secured three of the four permits needed for the mine with the Wetlands being the last one needed.

The City of Marinette Goes All in for the Community REC Center!

Marinette Sports and Event Center

In a special City of Marinette Council meeting last night, the council needed to decide if the three-building structure is a possibility for the City to afford after hearing from Construction Manager, Mike Murphy, of Sherrer Construction that the total cost of the facility would be 16.1 million dollars. Council President, Dorothy Kowalski, says the only options is to borrow or fundraise to make this happen.

Kowalski says we go all in or it’s going to be tough to get it done.

After council spoke at length with their Financial Advisor and weighed out their options, Council took action and moved forward with the three-building concept and borrowing a total of ten point one million dollars. They did not remove any of the components from facility and will go forward with what was specified in the plans for the Community REC Center.

You can listen here to as I speak with Marinette Mayor, Steve Genisot, about the next steps for the REC Center
