What was planned as a joint meeting of the Menominee and Marinette City Councils to hear information regarding the proposed Sulfide Mine will now just be a Committee of the Whole meeting of the Menominee City Council.

The meeting will remain at the Menominee High School Lecture Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Al Gedics, a UW LaCrosse sociology professor will be speaking at tonight's meeting regarding the Back Forty Mine.

Public Comment is limited to three (3) minutes on the agenda item.

You can HELP Stamp Out Hunger in OUR Communities!

stamp out hungerIf you’ve you checked your mailbox this week there’s a good chance that you’ve received a blue bag from your letter carrier and that means it’s the 25th annual National Letter Carrier Food Drive that is being held tomorrow, Saturday, May 13thIn 20-16, Marinette and Menominee had over 13-thousand visits made to local food pantries.

The Stamp Out Hunger campaign is one of the largest fundraisers in our community that supplies local food pantries with close to 15-thousand pounds of non-perishable food items.

If you would like to participate you simply need to leave your blue bag or any other bag with non-perishable food items by your mailbox for your letter carrier to pick-up.

Meet Cash! Marinette County Sheriff Department's newest addition to the K9 Patrol Team.

Approved this week at the Marinette County Law Enforcement Committee Meeting is the team of Deputy Spencer Elias and his K-9 Cash. Cash is an accepted donation to the Marinette County Sheriff’ Department by his handler Elias. Sheriff, Jerry Sauve says, they’ve worked through this plan with Corporate Council for some time.

According to his handler, Deputy Spencer Elias, Cash is an eight-year-old German Shepard who was previously used as a Patrol Dog in Crivitz.



While it’s not required in the State of Wisconsin to become certified both his handler, Deputy Elias, and K-9 Cash are certified every two-years with the National K-9 Association.

Flying the friendly skies could be no more with the Menominee County Airport.

Big decisions are ahead of the Menominee County Board after last night’s board meeting when commissioner Larry Schei addressed the board with financial documentation and what the future direction of the airport really means for the tax payers in the community.

Schei says, once they lost their sponsorship all grandfathering for the airport through the F-A-A and M-DOT AERO was lost.

Schei says there’s no economic development dollars being budgeted for the airport.


The County Board must decide and vote whether or not they want to continue operating as a County Airport. But first, they must hold a special board meeting for public input which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23rd at 5 p.m. at the Menominee County Courthouse.

Volunteers are needed for the Community Waterfront Cleanup.

The Menominee River Citizens Advisory Committee is hosting a cleanup of the community’s waterfront Saturday, May 6th and in order to make it a success they are asking for the community for their help. Committee Co-Chair, Mark Erickson says the cleanup has been on-going for the past 35 years.


Erickson says Nest Egg Marine is again hosting this event.

Check in is at 9am at Nest Egg Marine located at 300 Wells Street in Marinette with clean-up to begin at 9:30am. Supplies will be included as well as a pizza lunch for all volunteers provided by the M&M Great Lakes Sport Fishermen.

Construction begins at Marinette High School for the upcoming Community REC Center.

highschool overflow lotBeginning today the overflow lot at the High School will no longer be available for students or staff. District Facilities Director, Tom Tickler says the only change happening right now is the overflow lot and Pierce Ave exit.

Tickler says there will be a joined exit with the front loop and rear staff parking.

The Marinette School District appreciates everyone's patience during the transition and would like to remind everyone to use caution while dropping and picking up your children during school hours.

The Couple who allegedly stole an ATM Machine and led authorities on a two-day man hunt appear in court.

Setunsky 1 127-year-old, Chad Michael Setunsky, appeared via video conference Wednesday morning from the Marinette County Jail for his preliminary hearing. However, Setunsky waived his rights to a preliminary examination and Judge James Morrison says he wants to make sure he understands he is charged with 41 different offenses.

Setunksy’s status conference is scheduled for June 20th at 10 a.m. in Marinette County Court.

Setunsky’s partner, 27-year-old, Ashley Niewieroski , also appeared via video conference WednesdayNiewierowski morning for her preliminary hearing where she waived her preliminary examination as well.

 

Niwieroski is scheduled for arraignment on May 25th at 8:30 am with a tentative status conference date for June 20th at 11 am in Marinette County Circuit Court.

The man who murdered a woman and stuffed her in the trunk of her car is sentenced to prison.

Ihander Sentencing
Yesterday in Menominee County Circuit Court, Judge Mary Barglind , sentenced 49-year-old Gregory S. Ihander of Menominee Township for the stabbing death of Jolene Eichhorn. Eichhorn’s body was found in the truck her car near the Cedar Rivers State Harbor in September of 2015. Judge Barglind says there is an extreme and utter lack of remorse by Mr. Ihander that's never been seen in her courtroom before.

Barglind says the guidelines in the State of Michigan is advisory with a sentence of 37 and a half years.

Ihander will receive credit for 600 days already served in the Menominee County Jail. He is also responsible for court costs, therapy costs for Jolene Eichhorn’s children, and the over $3,000 dollars in funeral expenses for Jolene Eichhorn.

Michigan and Wisconsin Motorists’ a local bridge will be closed through October.

hattie street bridgeOn Monday, May 1st, the replacement of the concrete bridge deck over the Menominee River will begin. Hattie Street will be closed between Riverside Ave and 10th avenue and Riverside Drive Intersection will be closed.

Kenny Construction, Operations Manager, Wade Hamacher  says the only access will be for emergency vehicles only.

Hamacher  says anyone that is found on the structure will be immediately removed.

Safety is the main priority during the bridge closure and the City of Marinette would like to remind its residents that if you see anyone fishing or wandering about to call the Marinette Police.

The Kiwanis Club is doing another production of the Kiwanis Kapers which begins tonight at 7pm and runs through the weekend. Kiwanis Member, Brian Walters say is a local play that pokes fun at local events around town.


Walters says there isn’t anyone that doesn’t go unscathed in the production.

The Kiwanis Kapers are performing tonight and Saturday at 7pm and again on Sunday at 3pm in the Marinette High School Auditorium. Tickets are 15 dollars each and can be purchased through a Kiwanis member, at Brothers Three in Marinette, or at the door

Menominee Students are Hittin' the Road!

The Menominee High School Forensics team is heading to state. The maroons will be traveling to Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. The maroons will be taking over 20 kids to the state competition who qualified at the U.P. regional at Westwood High School earlier this month.

They will be competing against numerous other class B,C,D schools from across the state. Forensics is comprised of public address speaking competitions and dramatic interpretation competitions.

The Marinette Couple who led authorities on a two-day manhunt face additional charges.

BCR Burglary Suspects
27-year-old, Chad Setunsky now faces 19 felonies, including two counts of burglary while armed with a dangerous weapon, seven other counts of burglary, and 22 misdemeanors.

The charges result from alleged offenses spanning March 17th to April 9th. 27-year-ol Ashley Niewieroski faces seven felonies and five misdemeanor counts. 

The two are scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 am Wednesday.

The two were arrested earlier this month following a two-day manhunt after they broke into a convenience store and stole its ATM machine in the Town of Stephenson.

The Menominee County Airport could be looking for alternative uses.

twin county airportFor nearly two years the Menominee County Airport has been working on bringing in new business to the airport. However, some airport committee members believe they have a dead horse on their hands.

In a presentation, last night to the Menominee County Airport Committee by Business Partner, Christian Perreault  of Explorer Solutions, the Committee learned what steps they would need to take in order for the airport to pursue becoming a helicopter flight training center.

Economic Development Director, Nancy Douglas says there are things locally that they need to get a hold of first.

Chairman, Larry Schei says he thought it would take a year to turn the airport around.

For now, the committee requested that Explorer Solutions expand their scope and focus on the alternatives uses for the land at the airport and how they can generate revenue.

A Walking Tour of the Maritime Center for Excellence.

Last week, Thursday, Bay Cities Radio had the opportunity to take a tour of the Maritime Center in Marinette and view the progress along with Representative, John Nygren, Marinette Mayor, Steve Genisot, and Ann Hartnell of the Marinette County Association of Business and Industry.  Ground breaking for the facility was in October of 20-16 with construction beginning shortly thereafter. The Maritime Center is expected to be complete in July with tenants moving in, in August.

People Gather on Earth Day to protest the proposed Sulfide Mine.

Menominee Sulfide Mine Protest 1Making their way over the Interstate Bridge, which connects Marinette and Menominee, Michigan were protesters saying the Aquila's Back Forty Mine Project should be stopped. Members of the Menominee Indian Tribe joined the protest and they say they are concerned about the effect the mine has on the water and on their sacred grounds.

Retier says, everyone should be concerned.

Aquila Resources is currently in the process of obtaining the fourth and final permit which is needed to proceed with the sulfide mine.

Most recently, www.americanrivers.org listed the Menominee River as the tenth most endangered river in the United States.

Thousands were in attendance for Wisconsin’s Last Public Budget Hearing.

It was a full auditorium Friday as the Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee of the Wisconsin Legislature held its final public hearing on the State budget at Marinette High School. More than one-hundred people spokPhoto 2017 04 21 13 55 42 1123e to lawmakers on the panel pushing for Education, Mental Health Services, and the effects of the proposed sulfide-mine.

Citizen Speaker, Laurie Keen, says she wouldn’t be standing here today if it weren’t for the Mental Health services provided to her forty-years ago.

Rural roadways and Transportation as well as cuts to tuition in the U-W System were also of concern by many of the individuals in attendance.

This could could slow down the two-year spending plan, but Lawmakers did say they hope their work is finished by June.

A Michigan Representative proposes Dark Store payback into the Millions.

State Representative, Beau LaFave is getting ready to introduce legislation that would require the State of Michigan to reimburse local governments and municipalities that lost money to big box stores in rulings by the Michigan Tax Tribunal. LaFave says what’s a good way to get a politician in Lansing to care about an Upper Peninsula problem? Make them pay for it!


LaFave says his colleagues will say they can’t afford it.

Currently, there’s a tax loophole that big box stores have been using to have their stores appraised as if they were dark and vacant. LaFave says the state should take ownership of the problem they’ve been unable to address. The bill is still about two weeks away from being introduced in the house.

A Wisconsin Representative accuses a fellow Republican of bloviating.

Representative, John Nygren and co-chair of the Wisconsin legislature’s budget committee is accusing Republican Steve Nass of bloviating and issuing meaningless press releases.

Nass criticized Nygren in a press release for saying that he was open to allowing tuition to increase at the University of Wisconsin, ending a five-year freeze and rejecting Governor Scott Walker’s cut to tuition.

Nygren took to twitter in a series of tweets in reaction to Nass’ by tweeting while Nass focuses on press releases, he and others on the budget committee are focused on governing and not meaningless press releases.

The body of a missing man is found in Marinette County.

Friday evening the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and volunteers from the Michigan Back Country Search and Rescue found and identified the body of 78-year-old Andrew Michael Bray of Norway, Michigan near the Wisconsin shoreline, downstream from Bomber’s Golf Course in Niagara.

In January, Bray’s car was found near the river at Bombers Golf Course with footprints going down to the River Bank and onto a piece of ice. Bray is said to have been suicidal during the time of his disappearance.

Officials have ruled his death a suicide and no foul play is suspected.
