Aquila Resources acquires another permit.

Aquila Resources announced yesterday that they have received the third of four necessary permits from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) for it's zinc-and gold-rich Back Forty Project. 

The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Permit (NPDES Permit) was issued by the MDEQ on Wednesday following a public commentary period that ended on November 3rd including a review by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency completed on February 24th.

The NPDS permit regulates the effluent limitations and monitoring requirements of water discharged to the Menominee River during mine operation.  Aquila resources received their Mining Permt and Air Use permit on December 28th, 2016 and is currently working with the MDEQ to finalize the Wetlands Protection Permit expected later this year.

BAMC and Aurora BayCare Medical donate a combined One-Million-Dollars towards the Community Sports and Events Center.

Bay Cities Multi Media Center Community REC Center The much-anticipated announcement is made at Wednesday night’s City of Marinette Council meeting following the council’s approval of the healthcare’s name and signage for the new events center. The Director of Marketing at Bay Area Medical Center, John Hofer along with Aurora BayCenter Medical Marketing Director, Krissy Lillie both say the Rec Center meets their mission…it is health, it is wellness…and it is COMMUNITY!

The donation made by the healthcare collaboration is a milestone for the fundraising efforts and it also includes the naming rights for the new facility. It will now be called the Community REC Center – Recreation, Education, and Community. The name represents both hospitals and the City’s intended use of the center.

Gas Prices are on the rise...again!

Bay Cities Multi Media Gas Pump

According to Triple A’ Michigan, statewide gas prices have risen by about 15 cents per gallon in the past week. On Monday, the average price for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline was about two-dollars and forty-five cents per gallon.

That’s about 36 cents more that it was at this time last year.  

Wisconsin’s current statewide average is at two-dollars and thirty cents per gallon, up from two-dollars and one-cent from last year.

A Crystal Falls man pleads guilty to felony charges in a high-speed chase through two states.

Michael John Santi, 52, of Crystal Falls pleaded no contest to fleeing or eluding an officer in Marinette County Court last week. In December of 2015, Santi led authorities on a pursuit that started in Crivitz, Wisconsin through the North side of Iron Mountain, Michigan.

In exchange for Santi’s plea, prosecutors dismissed the two counts of felony recklessly endangering safety, second degree. Santi will remain in the Marinette County Jail until his May 31st sentencing, where he could face up to three and a half years in prison.

The City of Marinette is tightening up their ship and moving towards a formal grant application process.

UPDATED coMarinette Logo USE this oneThe City of Marinette Tourism Commission approved of the Room Tax Grant Application following the approval by the tourism commission at Monday's Tourism Commission Meeting.

At one time groups and organizations would address the room tax commission for their help in funding a project but now they will have a more formalized process to follow. Marinette Mayor, Steve Genisot says this will allow for those groups that are requesting funds to plan ahead when seeking donations or sponsorship's from the City.

Mayor Gensiot also says that there will be two grant application deadlines. The first will be at the beginning of the year, with an application deadline of February 28th with funds being available June 15th. The second application deadline will be September 30th and those funds would be available January 15th.

What you need to know about today's Wisconsin Spring Elections.

All three polling sites are open today beginning at seven am and ending at eight pm. Wards seven and eight are at the Duer Gym. Wards two, four, and six are at the Marinette High School, and Wards one, three, and five are at NWTC. Bero says there shouldn’t be long lines at the polls today. However, she does want to remind those that use the N-W-T-C polling location to be aware that parking is in the back, the voting room has changed, and to be on the lookout for signs indicating where you need to go.

Menominee's 14th Avenue Reconstruction Project Meeting.

Menominee’s 14th Avenue Reconstruction project will begin earlier than expected

 

At last night’s 14th avenue reconstruction information meeting. Menominee City Engineer, Valerie Melon updated residents on how the reconstruction process will take place. First by letting them know that the original May 1st start date will begin with a tentative April 15th start date, which is two-weeks earlier than anticipated. Melon says if you live on the 23-hundred block it will become difficult to get through and you will need to utilize the alley way. Melon says you will see a gravel street for the majority of the project.
Melon says that the 24-hundred block will receive new storm sewer where they never had storm sewer before, so you’ll see sewer work happening on both sides of the street early on in the project. There will NOT be a driving detour for motorists but the City of Menominee will post updates for residents on their website and other media outlets.

A Wallace man is facing felony charges of kidnapping and two counts of first degree sexual conduct.

kevin ihander43-year-old, Kevin Ihander of Wallace, Michigan turned himself into the Menominee County Sheriff’s Department last week after the Menominee prosecuting attorney’s office issued an Emergency Motion to Revoke Bond due to a domestic disturbance that occurred at his girlfriend’s residence in Middle Inlet earlier this month.
     According to court records the female victim stated Ihander made threatening statements that he’d go to work and kill her, other guys, and himself. Since this is strangely similar to a July 2016 incident that involved a female that Ihander choked while having sexual intercourse with. Prosecutors deemed he was in violation of the terms and conditions of his surety bond by leaving the State of Michigan to assault and threaten to kill the female victim at her home.

A pretrial conference is set for June 9th at 9:30 in Menominee County Circuit Court.

HARIBO, the Germany gummy bear company, is making a home in Wisconsin.

haribo gold bear original gummi bears 3lbHARIBO announced this past week that they will open their first North American manufacturing facility right here in Wisconsin.

The company’s $242 million-dollar investment is expected to create 400 good-paying jobs. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker says this project will mark one of the largest investments in new operations by an overseas company in Wisconsin history.

Walker says the investment by HARIBO is evidence that Wisconsin’s economy and workforce are strong.

Construction of the 500,000-square foot facility is expected to start next year.

Freezin 4 Reasons For the past ten years, Freezin’ 4 Reasons, has helped create awareness of homelessness for families in our community.

The Coordinator for Saint Vincent DePaul Youth Jeanine Harper says youth will be outside collecting money at the NWTC North Coast Building in Marinette.

The Menominee County Board Administrator debate continues.

Menominee County CourthouseTuesday evenings Menominee County Board of Commissioners meeting held the on-going conversation of hiring someone to fill the vacant county administrators position. Although though the board voted two-weeks ago, to begin the restart of the search by advertising the position. Some commissioners feel that it isn’t necessary to spend more money to broaden their search or even fill the vacancy. Commissioner John Nelson says that there are things that are popping up to be fixed even when they had an administrator.

Following much debate the board decided to move it forward to the next meeting as to whether they should spend five-hundred dollars towards online advertising or the minimum of seventy-five dollars towards advertising for the County Administrator position.

Cemetery lot owners in Menominee, the winter decoration removal deadline is approaching.

The deadline to have your lots cleared of winter decorations at the Riverside Cemetery in Menominee is April 15th. Any items that are left after April 15th will be disposed of by cemetery personnel. The Community Sports & Events Center is becoming a reality!

Marinette Sports and Event CenterIt might’ve taken three rounds of votes, hours of discussion between the 31-member board of supervisors, the Mayor of Marinette, and the county administrator but an agreement is made by Marinette County Board of Supervisors at yesterday’s Marinette County Board Meeting.

County Administrator, Jon Lafabvre says the county wants to be a partner to the towns, villages, and cities throughout Marinette County and if this project does not move forward, it will only put a road block between the county and the city.

The Marinette County Board voted in favor of loaning seven point five million dollars to the City of Marinette for the sports and event center.

The City of Marinette is currently in the beginning stages of the bidding process for the project. More about the project will be announced at next month’s City Council Meeting.

Marinette Police are urging citizens and businesses to be on alert.

A recent string of burglaries in the City of Marinette have the Marinette Police Department asking citizens and business owners to be aware of anything that may look suspicious. Since March 16th there has been break-ins at Cusack’s Tap, Thunder Lake Lodge, Mickey-Lou Bar-B-Q, and the Red Brick Tavern. Due to the similarity of the crimes the possibility of a connection between them has not been ruled out. Marinette Police Department is working in conjunction with other area law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information about the burglaries should contact Crime Stoppers at 715-735-5111.

This weeks Oconto County Road Repair Update.

Road WorkOconto County roadwork continues, expect lane closures.
The contractor will close WIS 22 between County I and Duame Road to begin installing erosion control, removal of tree stumps, and the removal of asphalt pavement. Roadway WIS 22 will be detoured from WIS 22 to County I to County A to US 141 to WIS 22. The project is scheduled for completion at the beginning of August. Motorists are reminded to use caution and remain alert when driving through this or any work zone.

Prison is ordered for two men who attempted to deliver heroin

Two of the Three people Arrested in a Drug Dealing Case in Crivitz last fall are sentenced to Prison.
29-year old Cullen Jon Mitchem of Iron Mountain and 39-year-old William L. Nichols of Florence, Wisconsin were convicted each on a count of Possession with Intent to Deliver During a traffic stop on Highway 141 near Crivitz last October. Mitchem and Nichols were found with over 4 grams of heroin, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia. Both have been sentenced to five-years initial confinement in prison and five-years of extended supervision.
