Wisconsin’s Economy is in the Best Shape since 2000

Michigan's Forest Legacy Applications are now being accepted.

The legacy program provides an opportunity for private forest land owners to ensure that their forestland continues to provide critical wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities. Marinette County has yet to make a decision to help fund the new Community Sports and Events Center.

Last month the City of Marinette attended the County Board of Supervisors meeting with the hopes that the County would join in the effort to help with the remaining one point five million dollars needed for the new Sports and Events Center. This request was moved to the County’s Finance Committee, after many supervisors raised concerns about how it would benefit the County as a whole. However, at Monday’s Finance Committee meeting, a decision still wasn’t made and it was tossed to the County’s Executive Committee for them to decide whether or not they would support the two low-interest loans to the City, for ten point five million dollars, instead of the original donation of one point five-million-dollars. The meeting of the Executive Committee is scheduled for 9am today at the Marinette County Courthouse.

The Chapel at Forest Home Cemetery is receiving Community Support

forest home cemeteryAt Monday evenings, City of Marinette Civic Affairs, Cemetery, Traffic and Lights Committee meeting, discussions continued as to what the City should do about the depreciating Chapel at the Forest Home Cemetery. While the committee discussed their options for the chapel, two community members attended the meeting with alternatives to help beautify and raise monetary funds towards saving the chapel.

A member from the Marinette Genealogy Group, Joan Pace, provided the committee with the groups idea of a Cemetery Walk in the Forest Home Cemetery later this year.

Eagle Scout, Christian Hornick, says he wants to build a sitting bench for the Cemetery as a part of his eagle scout project.

The committee approved both projects and they now move to full council for their approval.

The City of Menominee and the City of Marinette receive praise…

At last night’s City of Menominee Council Meeting, City Manager, Tony Graff, stated that he and Marinette Mayor, Steve Genisot, attended a meeting with the M&M Board of Realtors where they gave them positive feedback.

Graff also requested location ideas for the upcoming joint council meeting that will be hosted in Menominee.



After some discussion between council members, it was unanimously decided that the Stephenson Public Library will be the location that will unite the two councils for their one common goal…community.

Dunkin Donuts is coming to Menominee

Its official... the much anticipated Dunkin Donut’s is joining the Menominee Community. During last night’s Menominee City Council Meeting City Manager, Tony Graff, made the announcement in his monthly report to the Council.

Blood Donors are needed throughout Wisconsin.

The Blood Center of Wisconsin says donors are urgently needed.give blood marinette menominee

The center provides blood to 56 hospitals and it's been getting fewer donations because the flu season is running longer than normal, and heavy snow earlier this month kept people from getting out. As a result, the Blood Center has had less than a one day supply of "O" negative blood for about the past week. If you would like to donate blood locally, you can do so  on April 7th at Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette.

Want to get involved in the Empty Bowls Event?

Usually at this time of year we’d be getting ready for an annual event to raise awareness and funds to combat hunger.

This year’s Empty Bowls fundraiser is being planned for the fall. The local United Way is taking the reins for the Empty Bowls event. Tri-City Area United Way Executive Director Philip Everhart.

Everhart says Empty Bowls will again raise funds for area food pantries.



The date for this year’s Empty Bowls has yet to be determined. Those interested in getting involved with this year’s Empty Bowls can contact the Tri-City Area United Way.

It's a safe and fun place for kids.

 salogo verticalThe Salvation Army of Marinette and Menominee Counties has opened a new Youth Center at its Russell Street facility in Marinette. Major Carol Lemirand with the local Salvation Army says this was a project they’d been eyeing for some time.

Lemirand says the Youth Center’s activities all come from donations…and the center is geared for kids ages six-through-17.

Lemirand says the Youth Center actually opened in June.but the Salvation Army will hold its grand opening celebration for the center this week Wednesday, March 22nd. Volunteers are also needed to help staff the new Youth Center.

A national retailer is shuttering many of its stores and a Marinette location won’t be spared

 JC Penney has announced it will close 138 of its stores across the U-S this year…and the list of closures includes the J-C Penney at the Pine Tree Mall in Marinette. The company is trying to improve its profitability in the era of online sales. Most of the impacted stores are expected to close by the end of June.

Wisconsin Spring Turkey hunting permits are still available.

WI DNR wild turkey croppedThe 20-17 spring turkey permit drawing recently ended with just over 135 thousand applicants receiving wild turkey permits. A total of 240,768 permits have been made available for the spring turkey season, which leaves a little over 105 thousand available for purchase.

The leftover permits will be sold on a first come, first-serve basis beginning today (March 20th). Permits are issued by zone with one zone per day. Oconto County and Marinette County fall in zone 5. Permits can be purchased through GO WILD dot W-I dot GOV and all license agents.

Menominee School district approves of interim superintendent

It's official--Menominee High School Principal John Mans will take over as the district's interim superintendent at the end of this school year. The temporary appointment was approved at Thursday's Menominee School Board meeting. Mans says he’s expecting a smooth transition. Mans will have the option to return to Menominee High as the principal if and when he chooses. Current Menominee Area Public Schools Superintendent Terri Mileski has announced she'll be stepping down from the position at the end of this school year. The Menominee School Board also accepted Mileski's resignation Thursday evening.

Marinette County's Unemployment rate is on the rise.

 department of workforce developmentAccording to the latest figures from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, Marinette County’s seasonally unadjusted jobless rate rose to 5.7% in January, up from the 5.3% recorded in December. The new January rate is still an improvement from January of 2016 when Marinette County’s unemployment rate came in at 6.3%. Marinette County is now ranked as having the 20th highest jobless rate out of Wisconsin’s 72-counties.

Snapshot Wisconsin A volunteer-based project for wildlife monitoring

snapshot wisconsinLandowners in Marinette County who would like to play a key role in wildlife management are urged to check out Snapshot Wisconsin. The Snapshot Wisconsin project is a citizen science effort to capture images of all types of wildlife.

This project is led by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources staff in partnership with the University of Wisconsin – Madison and the UW-Extension. Snapshot Wisconsin offers an opportunity to view wildlife in their normal routines, in the wild, and data collected will help researchers better understand Wisconsin’s ecological landscapes.

New Hours for Marinette City Hall

There’s new hours for Marinette City Hall. Effective Monday, March 20th, Marinette City Hall and the Marinette Police Department will have new office hours. The hours will now be Monday through Friday from 7:30am until 4pm. The Marinette Building Inspectors office hours will be Monday through Friday 8am until 3pm. Two of Menominee's Annual Fireworks events are looking for approval.

At this week’s, City of Menominee Public Safety – Public Works committee meeting the committee discussed the Fireworks displays that are scheduled for this summer. First, they discussed the newly formed partnership with the City of Marinette and their five-thousand-dollar contribution towards the Fourth of July fireworks, and while both communities have questions as to where they will be held, Menominee City Manager, Tony Graff, stated that Menominee and Marinette will hold a joint council meeting to discuss the future of the Fireworks, but for this year everything will remain the same. Secondly, was the consideration of obtaining a permit for the annual Waterfront Festival Fireworks and little discussion was needed for the already budgeted fireworks. Both events were universally approved by the committee and it now moves forward to council for final approval.

Contractors learn about the bidding process for the new Community Sports & Events Center

A contractors meeting is held for Marinette’s new Community Sports and Events Center.

Wednesday afternoon Marinette Mayor, Steve Genisot, Scherrer Construction Manager, Mike Murphy, and Sommerville Associates the architects of the new sports and events center held a meeting at Marinette City Hall for contractors to ask questions about the bidding process and what they can expect during the aggressive timeline. Construction Manager, Mike Murphy, says they are not bidding on the project, they are strictly the oversite for the project.

Murphy also says all bids will be sealed and bids must be filled out on a bid form as they are not allowing for bids on miscellaneous pieces of paper. Ground breaking for the over 114,000 square foot building is expected sometime in April with the project being completed in December.

Is Menominee's tax roll becoming a bigger issue?

The City of Menominee's tax roll issues are now spilling over into the county.

Menominee County CourthouseTuesday, Menominee County Equalization Director Peggy Schroud informed the county commissioners over 3,000 of the city's tax roll adjustments in 2016 were found to be sporadic and without reason. Schroud says that this is uncharted territory for the city and county, and she hoping to get some guidance from the state on how to proceed with the 2017 taxes.

Meanwhile, Menominee City Manager Tony Graff provided an update on the city’s tax rolls at Wednesday’s Finance Committee meeting. Graff says Menominee has complied with the steps laid out in the state’s Audit of Minimum Assessing Requirements, and the city is on track to have its 2015 and 2016 tax rolls returned.

A myriad of projects are underway in Menominee

The Menominee County Board receives an update from the Menominee Business Development Corporation.

At the Tuesday evening Menominee County Board of Commissioners meeting the board heard an update from Menominee Business Development Director, Nancy Douglas, about the projects that her office has been working on. Douglas says, what they’re currently focusing on is the Lloyd house two project in Menominee’s Downtown which is rapidly moving towards being complete. Douglas says they are working with Cedarville Township again this year, regarding the trail that goes to U.S 2.

She also mentions that there were leftover funds in 2016 and each Economic Development Organization will receive $500 dollars to give towards the Upper Peninsula’s First Robotic Teams Competition. Each of the five schools in Menominee County will receive one-hundred dollars.

15th Annual HYC Awareness Day

mmyouth logo2It’s a day dedicated to promoting healthy habits for area students.
The Healthy Youth Coalition of Marinette and Menominee Counties holds its 15th annual Awareness Day this month. HYC Co-Director Karianne Lesperance says this has actually grown into a two-day event. Lesperance says the idea is Awareness Day attendees get to come up with ideas to promote healthy teen lifestyles. The students then return to their schools to share those ideas. Lesperance says the day includes an energetic keynote speaker. Students from all 13-school districts in Marinette and Menominee counties are invited to attend the Awareness Day events at Calvary Church Assembly of God in Marinette March 20th and 21st.
