Marinette Police are urging citizens and businesses to be on alert.

A recent string of burglaries in the City of Marinette have the Marinette Police Department asking citizens and business owners to be aware of anything that may look suspicious. Since March 16th there has been break-ins at Cusack’s Tap, Thunder Lake Lodge, Mickey-Lou Bar-B-Q, and the Red Brick Tavern. Due to the similarity of the crimes the possibility of a connection between them has not been ruled out. Marinette Police Department is working in conjunction with other area law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information about the burglaries should contact Crime Stoppers at 715-735-5111.

This weeks Oconto County Road Repair Update.

Road WorkOconto County roadwork continues, expect lane closures.
The contractor will close WIS 22 between County I and Duame Road to begin installing erosion control, removal of tree stumps, and the removal of asphalt pavement. Roadway WIS 22 will be detoured from WIS 22 to County I to County A to US 141 to WIS 22. The project is scheduled for completion at the beginning of August. Motorists are reminded to use caution and remain alert when driving through this or any work zone.

Prison is ordered for two men who attempted to deliver heroin

Two of the Three people Arrested in a Drug Dealing Case in Crivitz last fall are sentenced to Prison.
29-year old Cullen Jon Mitchem of Iron Mountain and 39-year-old William L. Nichols of Florence, Wisconsin were convicted each on a count of Possession with Intent to Deliver During a traffic stop on Highway 141 near Crivitz last October. Mitchem and Nichols were found with over 4 grams of heroin, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia. Both have been sentenced to five-years initial confinement in prison and five-years of extended supervision.

Robert R. Dettmering is sentenced 20 years in prison

The man charged in a Marinette County murder-for-hire scheme is sentenced  in Marinette County Court.
76-year old Robert R. Dettmering of Crivitz was sentenced to serve 20 years’ initial confinement and 10 years extended supervision for 1st Degree Intentional Homicide for attempting to hire a hit man to kill his son and daughter-in-law over a property dispute in August of 20-16. An emotional and distraught Dettmering had this to say when he addressed the court.


Marinette County Judge David Miron expressed his concerns before sentencing Dettermering.

The severity of Dettmering’s sentencing is as serious as it gets in the State of Wisconsin with it being a Class A Felony.

Marinette County has yet to make a decision to help fund the new Community Sports and Events Center.

Last month the City of Marinette attended the County Board of Supervisors meeting with the hopes that the County would join in the effort to help with the remaining one point five million dollars needed for the new Sports and Events Center. This request was moved to the County’s Finance Committee, after many supervisors raised concerns about how it would benefit the County as a whole. However, at Monday’s Finance Committee meeting, a decision still wasn’t made and it was tossed to the County’s Executive Committee for them to decide whether or not they would support the two low-interest loans to the City, for ten point five million dollars, instead of the original donation of one point five-million-dollars. The meeting of the Executive Committee is scheduled for 9am today at the Marinette County Courthouse.

The Chapel at Forest Home Cemetery is receiving Community Support

forest home cemeteryAt Monday evenings, City of Marinette Civic Affairs, Cemetery, Traffic and Lights Committee meeting, discussions continued as to what the City should do about the depreciating Chapel at the Forest Home Cemetery. While the committee discussed their options for the chapel, two community members attended the meeting with alternatives to help beautify and raise monetary funds towards saving the chapel.

A member from the Marinette Genealogy Group, Joan Pace, provided the committee with the groups idea of a Cemetery Walk in the Forest Home Cemetery later this year.

Eagle Scout, Christian Hornick, says he wants to build a sitting bench for the Cemetery as a part of his eagle scout project.

Wisconsin area Public School Libraries will receive funds.

Over 32 million dollars is donated towards Wisconsin’s Public School Libraries

The Board of Commissioners of Public Lands (BCPL) announced today that all K – 12 public school libraries throughout the State of Wisconsin will receive funds thanks to the earnings from the Common School Fund investments. School Librarians use the funds to provide a myriad of learning opportunities for students. Locally, Marinette School District will receive over $77-thousand dollars in funds. Other area schools include Crandon, Crivitz, Oconto, Oconto Falls, Peshtigo, and Wausaukee receiving funds up to 30-thousand dollars.

The Menominee City Council approves two improvement grants.

MenomineeMichiganMarinaAt this week’s Menominee City Council Meeting, the council approved two grant applications for projects within the City. The first to be approved was the Boat pump out Grant for the Marine Sewage Pump out Station at the Menominee Marina. The next is the passport grant, which is to assist in  financing the improvements at River Park Campground.

Both of these improvements were included in this year’s Recreation Plan and the Capital Improvement Project. While these grant applications were approved, concerns over another proposed grant application to improve Duby Park was heard with dismay. Menominee Manager, Tony Graff, urged the council to consider the grant for Duby Park.


Ultimately, the council voted it down with common consensus stating that now is not a good time for the project.

The City of Menominee and the City of Marinette receive praise…

At last night’s City of Menominee Council Meeting, City Manager, Tony Graff, stated that he and Marinette Mayor, Steve Genisot, attended a meeting with the M&M Board of Realtors where they gave them positive feedback.

Graff also requested location ideas for the upcoming joint council meeting that will be hosted in Menominee.



After some discussion between council members, it was unanimously decided that the Stephenson Public Library will be the location that will unite the two councils for their one common goal…community.

Dunkin Donuts is coming to Menominee

Blood Donors are needed throughout Wisconsin.

The Blood Center of Wisconsin says donors are urgently needed.give blood marinette menominee

The center provides blood to 56 hospitals and it's been getting fewer donations because the flu season is running longer than normal, and heavy snow earlier this month kept people from getting out. As a result, the Blood Center has had less than a one day supply of "O" negative blood for about the past week. If you would like to donate blood locally, you can do so  on April 7th at Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette.

Want to get involved in the Empty Bowls Event?

Usually at this time of year we’d be getting ready for an annual event to raise awareness and funds to combat hunger.

This year’s Empty Bowls fundraiser is being planned for the fall. The local United Way is taking the reins for the Empty Bowls event. Tri-City Area United Way Executive Director Philip Everhart.

Everhart says Empty Bowls will again raise funds for area food pantries.



The date for this year’s Empty Bowls has yet to be determined. Those interested in getting involved with this year’s Empty Bowls can contact the Tri-City Area United Way.

BREAKING NEWS - A cut Fiber optic line in Oconto County may cause issues with 911 Calls.

Oconto County area residents with a landline phone number beginning in 834 or 835 may be experiencing outgoing and incoming calling problems, including the ability to call 911. The Oconto County Sheriff’s Department has been informed of a fiber optic line that was cut and is causing the issue. If residents need to contact the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office try calling their non-emergency line at 920-834-6900 or they are encouraged to utilize their cellular telephone (If they have one) to call 911 in case of an emergency, as the cellular phones should not be affected by this issue. At this time the Sheriff’s communications center has not experienced any issues with outgoing or incoming phones calls.

It's a safe and fun place for kids.

 salogo verticalThe Salvation Army of Marinette and Menominee Counties has opened a new Youth Center at its Russell Street facility in Marinette. Major Carol Lemirand with the local Salvation Army says this was a project they’d been eyeing for some time.

Lemirand says the Youth Center’s activities all come from donations…and the center is geared for kids ages six-through-17.

Lemirand says the Youth Center actually opened in June.but the Salvation Army will hold its grand opening celebration for the center this week Wednesday, March 22nd. Volunteers are also needed to help staff the new Youth Center.

A U.P. man is sentenced to prison for a multi-state police chase.

Last week in Marinette County Court…33-year old Robert W.Montey of Kingsford was ordered to serve three-years initial confinement and three-years of extended supervision after being convicted on his 5th Operating While Intoxicated charge.

Last June police were informed of a possible intoxicated driver at a Burger King in Iron Mountain. The officers caught up with the suspect vehicle and were then led on a high speed chase on Highway 141 into Marinette County.

Police report the vehicle eventually crashed in Niagara and the driver Montey was arrested. He had a blood alcohol level of point-one-seven-nine according to Michigan State Police testing. He’s also been ordered to serve a minimum of five-years in prison for Michigan charges stemming from the same pursuit.
