The Delta County Man who held a woman against her will is being charged at the federal level…

RUSKA
Eric Scott Ruska the man who held LeAnn Wilmoth against her will for five days will be criminally charged and prosecuted at the federal level by the Assistant United States Attorney’s Office. Ruska had his initial appearance in court for one count of kidnapping on Friday, July 14th.

He is being detained pending further proceeding. The criminal complaint in the case against Ruska says, “on or about July 8th, Eric Scott Ruska unlawfully kidnapped and sexually assaulted an identified adult female whose initials are L-M-W. The case is being tried federally because the kidnapping alleged in this complaint occurred within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States

A missing Michigan woman is found alive in Munising after 5 days.

A little after 4 a.m. this morning, Lee Ann Marie Wilmoth and the man who held her captive for over four-days, Eric Scott Ruska were located at a gas station in Alger County.

Michigan State Police Troopers observed Ruska’s vehicle and approached making contact with Ruska and Wilmoth. It was at that time the troopers determined Wilmoth was being held against her will. Ruska was then placed under arrest…he is currently being held by the Michigan State Police detectives. Wilmoth was transported for evaluation.

Search efforts for the pair began Monday morning after they did not return from a fishing trip on Chicago Lake. Investigators feared Ruska would harm Wilmoth because he has a criminal history. Details on Wilmoth's condition is not available at this time, but she is alive, and Ruska is in custody.

The eighth annual Garden Walk is being held this Saturday…rain or shine. The annual event is put together by the Northern Lights Master Gardeners and the Marinette County U-W-Extension. Mary Holley is with the Master Gardeners.


Vicki Palid treasurer says they’ve included something new this year.


Advance Garden Walk tickets are available at Jack’s Fresh Market in Menominee and Marinette…Marinette Farm and Garden and the Marinette County U-W-Extension Office. Remaining tickets will also be available at the participating gardens the day of the event.

Emergency Road Closure issued in the City of Menominee due to Sink Hole.

Residents of Menominee an emergency street closure is issued for today...Due to an open sink hole, covering about a five-square-foot area and is about three feet deep. Next to the railroad tracks the City is closing 13th street from 14th Avenue through 23rd avenue for an emergency repair of the roadway.

The intersection of 13th Street and 18th Avenue is completely closed for construction. However, local traffic can access 13th Street between 14th Avenue and 23rd Avenue.

A Marinette woman could be facing a maximum of 20 years in prison.

27-year-old Ashley Niewierowski  appeared in Marinette County Court yesterday to enter a plea of no contest to three felony counts for her involvement in the burglary of an A-T-M machine from the Corner Convenience Store earlier this year.

Niewierowski  is charged with being armed with a dangerous weapon during a burglary which is a maximum penalty of 15-years in prison or $50,000 dollars, attempting to flee an officer which holds a maximum of 3 years 6months or $10,000 dollars, and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent a maximum of 6-years or $10,000 dollars.

Niewerowski is scheduled for sentencing on September 11th at 2:00 p.m. in Marinette County Court.

The Menominee County Board takes a unanimous stand against the proposed sulfide mine.

Marinette CTY BOARD 1Accusations of governmental corruption, greed, and a watered-down resolution are just some of the many remarks made MCTB 2to the Menominee County Board during public comment at last night’s board meeting.

Board member Steve Gromala says he would like to see stronger language in their resolution.

Board member Larry Phelps says he’s not even seeing ten-percent of the people supporting the mine.



The Menominee County Board moved the resolution forward for further discussion regarding the proposed sulfide mine and should be addressed at their next County Board meeting in two-weeks.

Momentum begins in the effort to restore the Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette.

forest home cemeteryA plan for restoring the Forest Home Cemetery Chapel is in the works.  At this week's Historic Preservation Commission meeting committee member Jason Flatt presented a rough draft of an 8-year plan to restore the chapel to its original condition. Flatt says what he’s proposing is a multi-phase approach to restoring the cemetery chapel.

Flatt says by 2025 the chapel could be set up for public use.

It looks as if the Menominee K-Mart is the last one standing in the U.P.

The announcement came last week that the Escanaba K-Mart will permanently close their doors come early October which leaves the Menominee location the only one left in the Upper Peninsula. Liquidation sales for the Escanaba K-mart will begin sometime this week.

A Marinette County man will serve time for Burglary.

 21-year-old, Christopher J. Miller, is sentenced in Marinette County Court last week for Burglary of a Building or Dwelling, second offense, of an Amberg home. Miller is to serve two-years initial confinement and three-years extended supervision.

A Green Bay man pleads no contest to having a child view explicit activity.

37-year-old, Gerard Alec Ratajczak  of Luxemburg, Wisconsin plead no contest to having a child age 13 to 18 view sexual activity in Marinette County Court last week. In October of 2016, Gerard communicated with an undercover agent whom he thought was a 14-year-old girl via the internet. Ratajczak initiated an in-person meet at a Marinette Motel. When he arrived, he was arrested on-site. Gerard faces up to a maximum of six-years initial confinement and up to $10,000 in fines. His sentencing is scheduled for October 2nd at 9:30 a.m. in Marinette County Court.

Closure to the Light House begins Today.

The walkway to the Light House in the City of Menominee will be closed to pedestrians from Monday, July 10th through Friday, July 14th to install new landscaping materials.

The contractor will be operating large equipment so they do not want to create any safety issues related to pedestrians walking through the work area.

They will not impact boat traffic using the launch facilities in anyway. It is possible that the installation may not take the entire week if the weather cooperates. If you should need additional information please contact Menominee City Hall.

Street & Boat Closures in Marinette will begin Friday, July 7th.

The City of Marinette Street and Boat Launch Closures will begin today and go throughout the weekend ...Beginning at five p.m. today Stephenson Island and boom landing will be closed until July 9th at 8:00 p.m. City of Marinette Public Works Superintendent Mike Swiatnicki  says since Stephenson Island holds all of the activities the boat launch is closed.



Swiatnicki there will be NO boat traffic on the Menominee River due to the fireworks.


The Stephenson Public Library parking lot is also closed from 3:00 a.m. Saturday July 8th until Sunday July 9th at 6:00 p.m. A FREE shuttle to the island is available at Jack’s Fresh Market in Menominee from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Construction of the new Community REC Center is on schedule.

Monsoon like storms and ten inches of rain won’t stop the construction of the new Community REC Center.  At this weeks, City of Marinette City Council meeting the council learned the project is on time and budget in their monthly project update from Scheerer Construction. Site Manager Bruce Bradley says for as soft and sandy as the site is, the rain helped firm up areas.



Bradley says they’ve received their submitting for the per-engineered building and are able to move forward.

As of this week, the entire projected is expected to be completed by the end January 20-18.

It’s the biggest weekend of the summer for the City of Marinette!

The City holds its 7th annual Logging and Heritage Festival this weekend.

City Clerk Lana Bero says there is a change to the parade route this year due to construction on Riverside Avenue.



Logging and Heritage Fest weekend begins with a fish boil at Red Arrow Park this evening. Activities then take place primarily on and around Stephenson Island in Marinette Saturday and Sunday.


There will be live family entertainment including Saturday’s Great Lakes Timber Show. The Logging and Heritage fireworks display is set for Saturday at dusk...and the annual parade down Main Street kicks off at noon.
